Our team provided engineering services at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, School of Computing & Engineering, The Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise and Research Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

We provided professional engineering services for the design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems (MPFP) for a 44,000 ft² addition to Flarsheim Science and Technology Hall at the University of Missouri–Kansas City campus. This new addition houses interactive and interdisciplinary teaching and research laboratories, technology-rich studios, maker space, and collaboration zones for five accredited degree programs in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and information technology.

Unique spaces incorporated into this new addition include a Renewable Energy Research lab with an accessible Renewable Energy Roof Deck, Nano Material Clean Rooms (which will include precise temperature and humidity controls), Visualization and Virtual Reality Labs, High-Performance Computing, Big Data and Data Analytics Lab, and a High Bay Structural Engineering Teaching and Research Lab.

Sustainability was a key factor in the success of this project. Sustainable features incorporated into this design included:

  • Exhaust air energy recovery using variable speed total enthalpy recovery wheels

  • Occupancy sensor setback of lighting and HVAC set-points

  • Demand-based ventilation control in non-lab spaces using CO2 and occupancy sensors

  • High-efficiency condensing type heating hot water boilers in variable primary flow arrangement

  • Variable flow process cooling water loop for closed-circuit equipment cooling and/or chilled beams for supplemental sensible cooling

  • Daylight harvesting

  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures
