Interior of the new forensic laboratory for the RCMP in Surrey, Canada

We provided mechanical engineering and energy modeling consulting services for this project in Surrey, BC, Canada.

Our team worked on the addition of a 88,000 ft² forensic laboratory to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) E Division headquarters in Surrey, Canada, including its mechanical penthouse. The forensic lab building includes office spaces and chemistry and biology lab suites.

Since this is an RCMP site, our design incorporated security and reliability features. As a P3 project, the design considerations also had to acknowledge the maintenance and replacement of equipment for the next 25 years, which required close collaboration with the facilities management provider.

We carefully reviewed the mechanical system design and energy performance to ensure the most flexible and robust system and within the construction budget. Key features of this design were air-to-air and air-to-water exhaust air heat recovery, room pressurization control, and a robust mechanical system with full redundancy in the labs.

The BC RCMP, or E Division, is the force's largest division in Canada.
