Sonoma Academy | LBC Zero Carbon + Petal Certified
The Sonoma Academy Janet Durgin Guild + Commons project has received the first-ever Living Building Challenge (LBC) Zero Carbon Certification in California and is the first project to be both Zero Carbon and Petal Certified (Energy, Materials, Equity, Beauty) by International Living Future Institute. Petal Certified projects also integrate Civilized Environment and Biophilic Environment Imperatives. This is yet another testament to the project’s revolutionary sustainable design and operation that puts wellness, sustainability, and occupant comfort at the forefront. The project is also LEED Platinum certified and is currently targeting WELL v2.
Passive design elements incorporated into the building systems include a ground source heat pump system for hot and cold water, photovoltaic panels with the capacity to produce net positive energy, and all-electric kitchens. These features and more are what position Sonoma Valley as one of the leading-edge sustainable projects in California and beyond.
Integral Group provided electrical, lighting, and photovoltaic design to the project. Our team of engineers and sustainability consultants also worked closely with the architects, other engineers and construction teams to vet 100% of the materials against the LBC Red List imperative, which focuses on getting the worst in class chemicals out of our buildings.
Integral Group Chief Sustainability Officer Megan White, who was involved with the project, is thrilled about the achievement: “The Sonoma Academy project is a vital example of leadership, as California’s first LBC Zero Carbon certified project in the state of California as well as LBC Petal certified (Energy, Materials, Beauty, Equity). California continues to be a leader for decarbonization and each project that commits to being fossil fuel-free helps move the needle forward for the entire industry. In addition to the zero-carbon story, both the zero carbon and red list free materials goals speak to solutions which support a more environmentally conscious design, as well as a healthier building for occupants.”
