The Shed

Our team provided security services for the Shed Cultural and Performing Arts Center in New York, New York.

Our team was retained to develop a security plan and design for the 200,000 ft² Shed. The Shed is described as a mixed-use cultural center that includes art galleries, performing arts space, indoor event space, and a unique large telescoping outer shed structure that slides open using industrial crane technology to create an additional 17,000 ft² of usable space for concerts and/or large-scale events.

The Shed is situated on a large site known as the Hudson Yards Redevelopment project. One of the challenging aspects of The Shed project was the requirement to work with multiple design teams and ownership interests to ensure that the site-wide vision for safety and security operations was carried through into the Shed, while still maintaining the individual needs of a high-profile cultural institution. We worked closely with all team members to develop a physical and electronic security system program that met the aesthetic needs of the architect, the operational requirements of the client, and the desired integration with certain aspects of the Hudson Yards site.

We developed a physical security protection plan that was fully coordinated with the architectural design related to forced entry requirements for glazing and perimeter entry points into the building. Additionally, our team developed a fully integrated access control, intrusion detection, emergency intercom, and video surveillance system to support the many potential uses of the spaces within and outside the Shed. The video surveillance system within each gallery space was designed to include camera locations that are moveable in the field to accommodate exhibit galleries/multi-purpose spaces, to maintain the desired level of video surveillance coverage during a specific event or mode of use.
