The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) transformed the Herbst Pavilion at Pier 2 into the school’s brand new Graduate Center.

The building includes artist studios, installation spaces, a student lounge, and graduate faculty and staff offices. Exhibition galleries are open to the public, and the community room has unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Introba (formerly Integral Group) provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for a series of earlier renovations at Pier 2, and we continued this scope of services for the SFAI Graduate Center. Our designs for this project preserve the in-slab radiant floor the team installed during earlier renovations. Since in-slab radiant systems are particularly effective for rooms with high transient loads, they are well suited for gallery spaces and community rooms, which fill up and empty several times daily. The photovoltaic system that we designed for the first phase of the renovation of Pier 2 will continue to provide solar electricity for the new SFAI Graduate Center.
