Siteman Cancer Center | Gary C. Werths Building
Advancing Healthcare Through Sustainable Design
Located within the BJC/Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) Downtown Academic Medical Campus, the Siteman Cancer Center is a 650,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility dedicated to cancer treatment and research. The center includes:
- Clinical spaces such as 96 examination rooms
- 88 private infusion bays (44 on each of floors five and six)
- Radiology services (MRI, CT, PET CT, X-ray, mammography)
- Multidisciplinary clinics
- Hematology and chemistry labs
- Phlebotomy suites
- Infusion pharmacy
Additional spaces include a retail pharmacy, boutique, and conferencing areas. A three-level parking structure with 430 spaces is located above the main lobby, and floors seven and nine are reserved as shell spaces for future expansion. A pedestrian link connects the facility to the Washington University Medical Campus, ensuring seamless integration.
The building features thoughtful design elements, including roof gardens visible from floor five, a patient-friendly drop-off area, and back-of-house spaces such as mechanical and electrical rooms and a three-bay loading dock on the lower level. The eighth floor houses most of the imaging departments alongside additional examination rooms, while the penthouse accommodates large mechanical equipment and elevator machinery.
In alignment with Washington University's goal to exceed energy savings by 30% above the minimum adopted standard, the facility incorporates innovative strategies to enhance sustainability in this complex, energy-intensive healthcare environment.
Introba's Comprehensive Contributions Include:
- Low Voltage Engineering: Designed and implemented IT, security, AV, and wireless systems to support the facility’s advanced operations.
- Energy Characterization: Analyzed energy usage across different load components to identify performance improvement opportunities.
- Optimized Envelope Design: Evaluated and recommended optimal performance characteristics for building envelope components to maximize energy efficiency.
- Parametric Analysis: Conducted detailed studies on the interactions of envelope parameters and mechanical systems to balance energy savings with construction costs.
- Technology Planning and Oversight: Participated in Big Room meetings, conducted CA visits to oversee vendor installations, and ensured seamless integration of advanced technology systems.
By identifying the point of diminishing returns, we provided the owner and architect with actionable options that aligned with the budget and ambitious energy conservation targets. The project has achieved LEED Silver certification, meeting rigorous energy performance standards without compromising functionality or patient care.
Our ability to integrate advanced analytics, sustainability expertise, and low-voltage engineering has created a high-performance facility that sets a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare design. The Siteman Cancer Center is not only a center of excellence in cancer care but also a model for innovation, technology integration, and environmental stewardship.
