Legion House

The heritage-listed Legion House is in the heart of the Sydney Central Business District (CBD).

A five-story building of aesthetic and social significance due to its fine façade detailing and early association with the YWCA. The project is highly praised in Sydney for adapting to changing values of the CBD, including bold sustainability targets.

Overshadowed by skyscrapers, the comparatively small building has limited sunlight and wind access to generate renewable energy. To achieve the goal of being grid-independent, the team looked beyond PV cells and wind turbines. It turned to the gasification of sustainable fuel sources such as compressed recycled paper pellets and recycled woodchips.

Introba (formerly Integral Group) met the challenge of incorporating essential services in a heritage building while ensuring the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) requirements were met without compromising floor area and with minimal impact on the ceiling. By locating most equipment on the roof of an adjacent non-heritage building, Introba overcame the challenges of heritage building requirements.

Legion House is one of Sydney’s most sustainable commercial buildings. Legion House has achieved carbon neutrality, six-star Greenstar, and six-star NABERS ratings by producing all its power on-site.

Introba provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire projection, and technology design services and sustainability consulting for this project.
