Goldschmidt Surgery Center
Optimizing Care and Resilience at the Capital Region Medical Center
The Capital Region Medical Center sought to convert a 25,000 sq ft section of an existing parking structure into a state-of-the-art Goldschmidt Outpatient Surgery Center. This facility would include four operating rooms, two procedure rooms, 24 pre- and post-care units, and associated support spaces. However, the existing hospital infrastructure lacked the capacity to support the additional load, requiring innovative solutions to maximize patient care space within the fixed footprint. Additionally, the hospital prioritized eliminating single points of failure in the air handling systems to enhance reliability and ensure uninterrupted operations.
Introba provided engineering design services to meet these complex challenges while maintaining operational efficiency and maximizing available patient care space. Key infrastructure elements included:
- Two new air handling units will be installed, zoned to split the surgical suite in half, mitigating the risk of a single point of failure.
- Integration of two 60-ton air-cooled chillers, a 500kW diesel generator, and an additional steam boiler within the hospital's steam plant to support the new facility.
- Creation of a dedicated chiller and generator yard across Monroe Street, with underground services connecting the systems to the surgery center, preserving existing parking spaces.
- Design of electrical infrastructure, including transfer switches and equipment, to power the center reliably and efficiently.
Our approach emphasized innovative engineering and patient-focused design. By overcoming space constraints and addressing the hospital's operational challenges, we delivered a resilient, efficient, and patient-centered facility. The use of zoned air handling systems ensures routine maintenance or unexpected system failures will not disrupt operations, a crucial feature for a surgery center. This project demonstrates Introba's ability to adapt infrastructure solutions to challenging environments, supporting the Capital Region Medical Center's mission to enhance patient care and operational excellence.
