Our team provided engineering services for the new Computer Science building on the east end of Washington University’s Danforth campus.

Our team provided mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and audio-visual systems engineering services for a new four-level, 75,000 ft² Computer Science building on the east end of Washington University’s Danforth campus. The facility incorporates large expanses of glass on the north and west sides of the building facing an interior courtyard. The building will house several large open lab areas, tiered and flat pooled classrooms, conference rooms, offices, and collaboration zones.

Campus chilled water and heating hot water were extended to the building to provide cooling and heating. Space cooling and heating for the building are provided through active chilled beams, with primary ventilation air provided by dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) units located in an attic mechanical room.

Sustainability was a key component of this project, and the project is pursuing LEED Gold Certification (V4). Sustainable features incorporated into this design included:

  • Active chilled/hot water beams

  • Exhaust air energy recovery using total enthalpy recovery wheels

  • Occupancy sensor setback of lighting and HVAC systems

  • Demand-based ventilation control using CO2 and occupancy sensors

  • Low-friction loss duct design (Fan Optimization)

  • LED Lighting with Daylight Controls

  • External Building Shading Fins

  • 30 kW Solar PV Array
